Founded by David Stein in 1991, the studio is the largest private conservation practice specialising in Paintings Conservation in Australia and the Asia Pacific region. We have a comprehensive knowledge of all periods of Australian art, with a unique understanding of the types of condition problems that arise with particular artists’ works, in addition to damages from our climate and the rigours of age.

We understand that the hole on your the wall gets larger whilst your artwork is being repaired. However, good conservation must not be rushed. Ours is a meticulous and time consuming profession, with treatments often requiring drying time or monitoring in the studio. Our team of conservators ensure a reasonable turn around at all times but never at the expense of the artwork. 

ARTCARE is our mobile service for comprehensive care of collections in homes, offices and galleries. We undertake onsite cleaning and condition assessments of private, government and corporate collections, including monitoring of light, temperature and humidity conditions.

• We provide advice on environmental control of sunlight, humidity, mould and mildew, and insect damage
• Advice on appropriate conservation storage of artworks, works on paper, collectables, etc

We offer advice on appropriate period framing for traditional, modern and contemporary artworks. Frame restorations and gilding of traditional ornate frames, frame reproductions, contemporary box and acrylic frames, mounting systems. We have a selection of frame samples in both our Alexandria and Woollahra studios.

PERIOD STYLE FRAMES

Restoration and repairs to damaged ornamentation and gilding. Reproductions of period style frames.

MODERN & CONTEMPORARY

New and reproduction frames to suit modern and contemporary artworks. All archival materials.

GILDING

In-gilding and re-gilding with 24ct gold leaf water gilding. Oil gilding and patination.

Our secure climate controlled storage facility is for specialised conservation storage of artworks.
Each artwork is assessed for condition, stored safely in our dedicated rack storage and regularly monitored.
We offer short and long term storage options.
