David Stein is Director and founder of David Stein & Co. After graduating from the University Of Canberra with a Bachelors Degree in the Conservation of Cultural Material in 1984, he was employed as a conservator in conservation laboratories at the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria and Museum of Contemporary Art. During this period David saw an increasing demand for the restoration of paintings to a museum standard for private individuals, small museums and galleries and the burgeoning art market. In 1991 he founded David Stein & Co which catered for museum standard conservation for the private sector.
David holds Professional Associate status in the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material (AICCM), a Professional Member of the International Institute for Conservation (AIC), a Professional member of the British Picture Restorers Association and member of the Australian Antique Dealers Association. David Stein & Co is in the process of organising the next AICCM Australian Paintings Conservation Specialisation Group Symposium to be held in Sydney in 2012.
Sian has worked for David Stein & Co since 2000. After graduating from the University of Canberra in 1998 with a Bachelors Degree in Applied Science (Conservation of Paintings), Sian has worked for various private and public conservation institutions in London, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney.
She has participated in a number of accredited conservation workshops and seminars dealing with retouching, lining techniques, cleaning methods, and varnishes.
Sian also holds a degree in Fashion Design from RMIT and has a particular interest in period fashions.
Katherine joined David Stein & Co in 2008 after graduating from the University of Melbourne with an MA in Cultural Materials Conservation, specialising in the conservation of paintings. She also holds a Bachelor of Art Theory (Hons) from the College of Fine Arts UNSW.
Katherine developed her knowledge of modernist and contemporary Australian art whilst working in commercial galleries in Sydney and Melbourne. Following her conservation training she also worked at the Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation in Melbourne.
Katherine is interested in complex structural repairs of paintings on canvas and board, as well as cosmetic treatments and frame repairs. Her past research projects include investigations into the materials and techniques of twentieth century artists.
